Empress Etagere

This eye-catching and functional piece draws its inspiration from a Japanese cabinet that was presented by the Empress of Japan to Mrs. Julia Dent Grant, wife of Ulysses S. Grant, during their 1879 tour of the world. Decorated with lacquer and metal leaf, the cabinet was presented to the Smithsonian in 1903 and is housed in the Politics and Reform Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Behring Center. The Empress Etagere features four staggered shelves and two smaller shelf areas, with decorative metal pieces on the corner shelves. Two large lower drawers complete the piece.
